Wednesday 17 April - and they’re off!

After days, weeks, months of planning and training not to mention a few nerves the moment has finally arrived for Kokoda! The trekkers arrived safely yesterday and were met at the airport by their Australian guides and transported back to the Hilton hotel where they had a pre trek briefing, dinner before some last minute packing and repacking.

Today the crew were up early for breakfast before heading back to the domestic airport for a 7am flight to Popondetta. After arriving at Popondetta they took a 15 minute ride into the town centre where they visited the memorial to Popondetta and then headed to the supermarket to pick up some last minute supplies before boarding the truck again for, what was supposed to be, a three hour journey to Kokoda. Include 2 punctures and 1 bogged truck the drive took a little longer than expected.

They finally made it to Kokoda Village, the trekkers were introduced to their porters and support staff, who they will spend the next eight days with. They visited the Kokoda museum on the plateau and discussed some more about the campaign. Then they had lunch at village before the first of many “Packs On” call’s was given and they all stood together for a group photo under the famous Kokoda arches. They the headed into the PNG Jungle to retrace the footsteps of heroes and trekked out of Kokoda to Kovelo and onto Hoi for a short break, before hitting the first climb of the trek and the trekkers now know they are trekking Kokoda and that first hill was a shock for a few.

Thankfully the weather was perfect for the first day and the track has dried out and is in good condition. They are now at the campsite of Deniki where they are enjoying a shower and getting ready for dinner before a briefing on the tomorrows trekking.

Happy 13th birthday Nixon. Love always, Mum.
