Thursday 13 June - the Day is finally here

After hours of planning and training the realisation of Kokoda has arrived! The trekkers arrived yesterday and were picked up at the airport by their Australian guide Carl and transported back to the Hilton Hotel where for a pre trek briefing, dinner and some last minute packing and repacking.

This morning the trekkers were up by 0430 for breakfast before heading back to the domestic airport for a 0630am flight to Popondetta. A short 45minute flight and after arriving they took a short 15 minute ride into the town centre and they visited the memorial to Popondetta before heading to the supermarket for any last minute supplies before boarding the truck again for Kokoda. The road was dusty but in relative good condition so the crew made good time getting into Kokoda

After arriving at Kokoda Village, they visited the Kokoda museum on the plateau and discussed there first battles of the Kokoda campaign. Then they had lunch and were introduced to their guides and support staff, who they will spend the next eight days with.

There were a few nerves during lunch, but they disappeared after the first of many “Packs On” was called. They all stood under the famous Kokoda arches for a group photo and then they trekked off into the Jungle to commence their own adventure following the footsteps of heroes. They trekked from Kokoda to Kovelo, Hoi and then tackled the first climb of the trip on the way too Deniki. Yep once again the winner was hill one!

The group made fantastic time & got into camp at 5pm local tine are now resting and getting cleaned up at Deniki campsite before dinner and a briefing on tomorrows trekking.

MESSAGES: Karly missing the family & doing great.
