Thursday 15 August

Up early this morning and the trekkers headed the short drive from the Hilton Hotel back to the Airport for a 06:30am flight to Popondetta. They were met there by AKT ground staff and boarded a troop carrier for a short 15 minute ride into Popondetta town. The crew visited the memorial park for the battle of Popondetta, picked up some supplies and then boarded the troop carrier for the 3 hour journey to Kokoda. They stopped along the way at the famous Kamusi river where the Japanese General Hori drowned. After arriving at Kokoda they inspected the museum, memorial to the battle of Kokoda and the Kokoda plateau; the scene of some horrific fighting. Here they had some salad rolls and were introduced to their local guides and support staff and then headed off into the jungle where they will spend the next 8 days.

The sun was out and weather absolutely perfect today, however the track was a little muddy but the group powered through. They trekked through the jungle pass Kovelo, had a short break at Hoi and then started the first of the hills on their way to Deniki. That first hill, as always, tested a few but all are going well. With a light rainfall to end the day, all have arrived safely to camp at 5pm, and are now getting washed up for dinner and a briefing on tomorrows trekking.
