DAY 4 - VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI
Saturday 05 July
Amazing views at last nights camp sleeping by the creek. Yet again another 5am wake up call for day 4 on the track.
The morning started with trekking out of camp, across the bridge, and then a short hike before a long trek up to the highest point of the track to Mt Bellamy (2190 metres). From here the beautiful forest track is festooned with moss, and once again the occasional sweeping panorama adds to the beauty of the jungle. Heavy rain last night made the trekking hard going today as they hiked to the Myola lakes, a expansive dry lake bed which were used at various times during both phases of the Kokoda campaign, the site of one of the Australian Army’s major supply depots. After inspecting Myola and listening to more stories of the campaign, they then trekked 30 minutes down to Bombers camp to inspect the site of a wrecked American bomber called the “Happy Legend” and have luch. They made their way back onto the track after lunch for a long 2.5 hike to the Kagi/Naduri junction and they rested here before making their way down to the bottom before a short up into the village of Kagi. It is here that most of the Australian Kokoda Tours porters originate from. The trekkers made good time getting into camp at 4:30pm and were greeted by the local villages with a traditional welcome, and tonight they will be treated to a traditional sing-sing by the local communities and well Earn’d dessert.
