DAY 4 - VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI
Thursday 06 November
The trekkers enjoyed amazing views at last night’s campsite over the creek. They were up early again and had pancakes for breakfast before heading out of the campsite across the bridge for 15 minutes. Then they tackled the first hill on the way up to the lookout before another 15 miuntes to the highest point of the track Mt Bellamy (2190 metres). They gathered here for a group photo before crossing the Kokoda Saddle and trekked through the beautiful forest track, which is festooned with moss. Occasionally the forest opened-up with sweeping panorama views which added to the beauty of the surrounds before arriving at Myola lakes. These dry lake beds at Myola were used at various times during both phases of the Kokoda campaign the site of one of the Australian Army’s major supply depots.
After inspecting Myola and listening to more stories, they then trekked 45 minutes down to Bomber’s camp to inspect the site of a wrecked American bomber called the “Happy Legend” and had lunch here. The skies were blue up until lunch however, after making their way back onto the track for a long 2.5 hike to the Kagi/Naduri junction the rain came. The trekkers rested here and could see tonight’s camp in the distance as the thunder cracked and echoed through the mountains. Then the rain came as they made their way down, flat with a short up into the village of Kagi, where most of Australian Kokoda Tours porters originate from. The group arrived in Kagi at 4pm and were greeted by the local villages with a traditional welcome and tonight they will be treated to a traditional sing-sing by the local communities and well-earned dessert.
