DAY 4 - VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI - MONDAY 16 JUNE
Amazing views were enjoyed at last night’s campsite over the creek and although it was a cold, most said that it was their best sleep of the trek. The great sleep, however, was ended with a 5am wakeup call as the crew enjoyed some pancakes for breakfast. Then the day then started trekking out of the camp and across the bridge, before a short hike for 20 minutes and then a steep long climb to the highest point of Mt Bellamy (2190 metres) they gathered for a group photo at the highest point. They rested here and after a few more hours of trekking they hiked over the Kokoda Saddle, where the beautiful forest track is festooned with moss and then hiked to the Myola lakes, these dry lake beds at Myola were used at various times during both phases of the Kokoda campaign the site of one of the Australian Army’s major supply depots.
After inspecting Myola and listening to more stories, they then trekked 40 minutes down to Bomber’s camp for an early lunch and inspected the site of a wrecked American bomber called the “Happy Legend”. Then they made their way back onto the track which is quite overgrown and made for a long 2.5 hike to the Kagi/Naduri junction and then trekked down to the junction, with and short up into the village of Kagi, where most of Australian Kokoda Tours porters originate from. The trekkers were a little tired today as they reached the halfway point, however according to Jules and Sheree there was still plenty of laughter. The temperature was a little cooler today & track conditions were good as they arrived in camp at 4:30pm & were greeted by the local villages with a traditional welcome. Tonight they will be treated to a traditional sing-sing by the local communities and well-earned dessert.
