DAY 4 TREKKING: VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI VILLAGE

Sunday 20 April

The trekkers enjoyed a good sleep last night over the creek and a few said it was their best sleep of the trek. They were up again at 5am for breakfast, (they even had pancakes) before the packs on call was given. They then trekked out of camp across the bridge, hiked for 15 minutes before they hit a steep climb for 30 minutes to the highest point of the track Mt Bellamy. They gathered at the top for a group photo before trekking 10 minutes where they took a detour and trekked through the moss forest, where the temperature dropped, and it was a little cooler. Then they trekked for another 1 hour to Myola supply dump, which blew them all away! Myola was the site of the biscuit bombers, which was used to resupply the troops. They discussed the campaign here before heading 40 minutes down to Bomber’s camp for lunch (the site of an American B25 Bomber “The Happy Legend” that crashed here 5 December 1942). After lunch they trekked 20 minutes back onto the track, then an hour before a break, another hour for a break, another 45 minutes to the Kagi - Naduri junction. (It was here the 39th Battalion were relived of action on the Kokoda track) and then 20 minutes into camp. The weather and track conditions were better today with no rain and no mud! This helped the group arrive at Kagi nice and early at 3:30pm were they greeted by the beautiful voices of the local villagers giving them a village welcome. There are a few sore knees and toes however, they are digging deep, and everyone is happy. Tonight, the children will come and visit them after dinner and treat them to a traditional sing-sing.
