DAY 7 - NAURO TO UA ULE CREEK
Wednesday 29 April
The day begun trekking out of camp this morning with a 60 minute climb and this definitely got the lungs warmed up. The trekkers were rewarded at the summit with some amazing views of the Maguli Ranges. It was here that the Japanese reported they could see the lights of Moresby. Then it was a long hike down and across for 90 minutes for a short break before another 60 minutes to visit some Japanese slit trenches. Then a short hike down to Ofi Creek campsite for morning tea.
After morning tea it was one of the toughest climbs of the trek to date, up Ioribaiwa Ridge, which was the final advance of the main Japanese army. At the summit, they dropped their packs and took a short 15-minute hike to see another Japanese Ammunition Dump and slit trenches. Then they trekked back onto the track for another 60 minutes down the ridge to the Village of Ioribaiwa for lunch. After a good break they hiked down from the village for an hour to Ua Ule Creek, where a few of the trekkers changed into their river shoes. They then trekked across the creek a dozen or so times, on the way to the Ua Ule creek camp for there last night on the track and everyone is in amazing spirits! Into camp at 4:30pm, the group are now reflecting on their day of amazing weather and all canโt wait to complete their achievement of walking through the owerโs corner arches tomorrow.
