DAY 4 - VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI

Saturday 26 April

Amazing views were enjoyed at last night’s campsite over the creek and although it was a cold, most said that it was their best sleep of the trek. The great sleep, however, was ended with a 5am wakeup call as the crew enjoyed some pancakes for breakfast. Then the day then started trekking out of the camp and across the bridge, before a short hike for 20 minutes and then a steep long climb to the highest point of Mt Bellamy (2190 metres) they gathered for a group photo at the highest point. They rested here and after a few more hours of trekking they hiked over the Kokoda Saddle, where the beautiful forest track is festooned with moss and then hiked to the Myola lakes, these dry lake beds at Myola were used at various times during both phases of the Kokoda campaign the site of one of the Australian Army’s major supply depots.

After inspecting Myola and listening to more stories, they then trekked 40 minutes down to Bomber’s camp for an early lunch and inspected the site of a wrecked American bomber called the “Happy Legend”. After lunch there was a light rain that turned pretty heavy after an hour and all the trekkers got very wet, the rain caused the track to be muddy and slippery conditions. Lots of falls! They made their way back onto the track for a long 2.5 hike to the Kagi/Naduri junction and then trekked down to the junction, with and short up into the village of Kagi, where most of Australian Kokoda Tours porters originate from. On arriving into camp at 3:30pm, they were greeted by the local villages with a traditional welcome and tonight they will be treated to a traditional sing-sing by the local communities and well-earned dessert. Everyone is doing well and can’t beileve day 4 is done!
