DAY 4 - VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI

The trekkers enjoyed incredible views at last nights campsite over the creek, although it was a bit chilly most had there best nights sleep to date. However, the great sleep was ended with a 5am wake up call for day 4 on the track. The day then started trekking out of the camp and across the bridge, before a short hike for 20 minutes and then a steep long climb to the highest point of Mt Bellamy (2190 metres). They rested here and after a few more hours of trekking they hiked over the Kokoda Saddle, where the beautiful forest track is festooned with moss. The trekkers gathered for a group photo at the highest point and then hiked to the Myola lakes, these dry lake beds at Myola were used at various times during both phases of the Kokoda campaign the site of one of the Australian Army’s major supply depots.

After inspecting Myola and listening to more stories, they then trekked 40 minutes down to Bombers camp to inspect the site of a wrecked American bomber called the “Happy Legend” and having lunch here. After lunch the track became quite muddy as they made there way back onto the track for a long 2.5 hike to the Kagi/Naduri junction. They trekked down to the junction, with and short up into the village of Kagi, where most of Australian Kokoda Tours porters originate from. On arriving in camp the trekkers were greeted by the local villages with a traditional welcome and tonight they will be treated to a traditional sing-sing by the local communities and well earn’t dessert.
