Day Two on the Kokoda Track: Remembering Isurava’s Heroes

The trekkers were up at 5:00 am this morning after spending their first night on the Kokoda Track. Leaving the village of Deniki, they made their way past lush choko vines, spectacular scenery and sweeping views across the valley as they headed towards Isurava village. The weather was great with a dry track and not too hot.

After a short break at Isurava, the group reflected on the history of the 39th Battalion before shouldering their packs and continuing along the track. A few hours later, they reached the Isurava Memorial, situated at a significant point on the historic Isurava battlefield, through which the Kokoda Track passes.

The trekkers visited Kingsbury’s Rock, the site of the action that earned Private Bruce Steel Kingsbury the Victoria Cross on 29 August 1942. At the memorial, they held a moving service and paid their respects to Australia’s returned and fallen soldiers.

They also listened to podcasts recounting the campaign and the stories of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, including Corporal John Metson, Charlie McCallum and Bruce Kingsbury. It was a powerful and emotional opportunity to connect with the history of the track and honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served.

After lunch at the memorial, the trekkers once again shouldered their packs and continued towards Alola, stopping along the way at Cons Rock. They arrived in camp at 4:15pm and are now enjoying a well-earned rest, with showers and preparations for dinner underway.

After a challenging and reflective day, the group is looking forward to a relaxing evening in camp before continuing their journey tomorrow.
