DAY 4 TREKKING: VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI VILLAGE
Sunday 12 July
The trekkers enjoyed a solid night’s sleep by the creek, with several saying it was their best rest of the trek so far. They were up again at 5:00 am for breakfast – pancakes included – before the call to shoulder packs and move out.
Leaving camp across the bridge, they trekked for 15 minutes before tackling a steep 30-minute climb to Mt Bellamy, the highest point on the track. At the summit they paused for a group photo, then continued for 10 minutes before detouring into the moss forest, where the temperature dropped, and conditions turned cooler and damp.
From there, they trekked for another hour to reach the Myola supply dump – a highlight of the day. Myola, once serviced by the famous “biscuit bombers” to resupply Australian troops, left a strong impression on everyone. After discussing the history of the campaign, they descended for 40 minutes to Bomber’s Camp for lunch, the crash site of the American B-25 bomber “The Happy Legend,” which came down here on 5 December 1942.
Post-lunch, they rejoined the main track after a 20-minute walk, then continued for an hour before a short break, another hour before the next rest, and a final 45 minutes to the Kagi–Naduri junction. This is the historic point where the 39th Battalion was relieved of action on the Kokoda Track. From there, it was just 20 minutes into camp. Arriving in at 4:00pm… Donuts on arrival was a real trek treat!
On arrival in Kagi, the group was welcomed by the beautiful singing of local villagers in a traditional village ceremony. There are a few sore knees and toes, but everyone is digging deep and in good spirits. Tonight, the local children will visit after dinner to perform a traditional sing-sing, a fitting end to an unforgettable day on the track.
