DAY 6: MENARI TO NAURO
Tuesday 14 July
The trekkers departed Menari and made their way to the base of the first climb for a short rest before tackling a steady 30-minute ascent to the summit, rewarded with sweeping views back over Menari. From there, they continued on to the Nauro lookout, where tonight’s destination village came into view in the distance.
The track then led them across and through the swamp en route to Brown River, where they enjoyed a well-earned break and a refreshing swim. A brief 15-minute trek brought them to Amaduri Village for morning tea, before they re-entered the swamp for another 45 minutes to the base of the false peaks. Track conditions remained dry up to this point.
The crew were happy to know camp arrival was a bit earlier today as the heat was giving them no break.
After a rest at the base, they faced the seemingly never-ending slopes of the Maguli Range, eventually arriving at New Nauro Village at 1:30 pm. The day’s effort was felt by all, but they reached camp in good spirits and appreciated the earlier finish. Some took the opportunity for an afternoon nap, while others washed clothes and prepared for the next stage of their Kokoda journey.
