DAY 3 - ALOLA TO VASI CAMPSITE

Sunday 11 October

The trekkers settled into camp early last night, with most in bed straight after dinner. After a full day on the track, everyone welcomed the opportunity to rest, and the camp was quiet well before nightfall.

The morning began with a peaceful descent from camp towards the creek. The track offered spectacular views across the valley, with the surrounding ridge-lines and forested slopes creating an impressive backdrop as the trekkers made their way towards the crossing. After crossing the creek, the group faced a short climb before stopping briefly to rest and regroup.

From there, they began a long and gradual ascent that continued for several hours towards the Eora Creek battle site. Although the climb was not especially steep, its length made it a demanding section of track, requiring a steady pace and regular hydration. The group remained focused as they worked their way higher through the rainforest.

Along the route, the trekkers made a short detour to inspect a Japanese ammunition dump. The stop provided an opportunity to discuss the defensive importance of the position and the difficult battle required to capture the Japanese fortifications in the area. Standing among the remnants of the wartime structures helped bring the history of the Kokoda campaign to life and gave the group a greater appreciation of the challenging conditions faced by the soldiers who fought there.

After returning to the main track, the trekkers continued for approximately another hour before stopping for morning tea. The break was well deserved, allowing everyone to refuel, rehydrate and recover before tackling the next section.

Once rested, the group set off again for a tough 45-minute climb to another historically significant location: an Australian ammunition dump. The trekkers examined the site, which still contained live grenades and rounds. Its presence served as a stark reminder of the intensity of the fighting and the dangers that remain hidden within the track’s wartime landscape. The group took care around the site while learning more about its role during the campaign.

The next section involved approximately two and a half hours of undulating terrain. The track rose and fell repeatedly, with the rhythm of the walking made more challenging in places by fallen trees obstructing the path. The trekkers negotiated the obstacles carefully, stepping over and around the timber while maintaining a steady pace through the rainforest.

Eventually, they reached Templeton’s Crossing, where they stopped for lunch. The crossing provided a welcome opportunity to relax beside the water, replenish their energy and enjoy a longer break before beginning the afternoon’s journey.

The afternoon route began with a steep 30-minute climb. After gaining elevation, the group encountered several flatter sections before taking on further rises and descents. They then continued for approximately an hour across mixed terrain, with the track varying between forested slopes, uneven ground and more manageable stretches.

The final section of the day involved a 30-minute descent into Vasi campsite, beside the creek. By this stage, the trekkers had covered a substantial distance and negotiated a wide variety of terrain, but everyone arrived in camp in great spirits by 4pm

Once settled at Vasi, only a few of the hardier trekkers ventured into the creek for a bracing swim. The cool water was certainly refreshing, although not everyone was tempted to take the plunge, a few chose instead to relax around camp, enjoy some popcorn and unwind after the day’s demanding walk.

With dinner approaching, the trekkers had time to rest, share stories from the day and reflect on the historical sites they had visited. They finished the day tired but pleased with their progress, looking forward to what the next stage of the journey would bring.
