DAY 3 - ALOLA TO VASI CAMPSITE
Monday 15 June
Today was another challenging but rewarding day on the Kokoda Track, testing both the trekkers' endurance and determination.
The day began with a short 15-minute walk from camp to the village of Alola. Passing through the village, the group descended towards the creek, taking in some spectacular views along the way. After crossing the creek, they tackled a short but steep climb before continuing for approximately an hour to a rest stop.
The trekkers then pressed on for another hour to visit a Japanese ammunition dump, providing a fascinating insight into the wartime history that remains scattered throughout the track. A further 40-minute trek brought the group to Eora Creek, where they stopped for a well-earned morning tea. Fortunately, everyone took the opportunity to refuel, as the next section featured a steep 45-minute climb to an Australian ammunition dump. Here, trekkers were able to see live Australian grenades and mortar rounds that still remain from the campaign, offering a powerful reminder of the fierce fighting that took place in these mountains. Rejoining the track, the group continued a long and undulating 2.5-hour trek to Templeton's Crossing, where lunch was enjoyed beside the crystal-clear creek. Adding to the enjoyment of the day were sunny skies from start to finish and virtually no mud on the trackโconditions that are rare and greatly appreciated on Kokoda.
After lunch came another demanding 30-minute climb, followed by a slightly easier 30-minute section before a short break at the top of the final ascent for the day. From there, the trekkers descended for around 30 minutes into tonight's campsite, crossing high above a beautiful creek along the way.
Day 3 proved to be one of the toughest days of the trek so far. With rivers running high and the terrain presenting constant challenges, every member of the group demonstrated remarkable resilience, teamwork, and determination. The trekkers are now enjoying a refreshing soak in the cool creek before settling in with some popcorn and a well-deserved rest, ready to take on another memorable day on the Kokoda Track tomorrow. The spirits remain high, the camaraderie continues to grow, and the adventure rolls on through the mountains of Papua New Guinea. ๐๏ธ๐ต๐ฌ๐
