DAY 5 - KAGI TO MENARI

Wednesday 17 June

The trekkers enjoyed a wonderful evening last night, listening to the beautiful singing of the local villagers before settling in for a well-earned rest.

This morning began with a short 10-minute walk out of Kagi village, passing the church and airstrip before reaching one of the most challenging sections of the day—the steepest descent of the entire trek. The group carefully made their way down the rugged terrain for 45 minutes to the creek below, where they stopped for a short break and topped up their water supplies.

After crossing the creek, it was straight back to work with a short but tough 10-minute climb before continuing on a 45-minute trek exposed to the sun until reaching Efogi 2 for a well-deserved break.

From there, the trekkers descended into Efogi 1, where they visited the local museum and gained further insight into the history of the Kokoda Campaign. A short walk through Efogi village then brought them to the creek for another water refill before the next challenge awaited.

The climb out of Efogi and up towards Mission Ridge proved tough for many, with the exposed conditions adding to the difficulty. Reaching the top was a welcome achievement before the group continued the short five-minute walk which then brought them to the Brigade Hill memorial site, where the trekkers gathered for a commemorative service. Here they reflected on the sacrifice and courage of those who fought during the campaign while listening to more remarkable stories from one of the most significant battlefields on the Kokoda Track.

Following lunch, the group set off on a long 2.5-hour trek down into the valley below. The reward at the bottom was a refreshing swim, providing welcome relief after another demanding day on the track.

The day wasn't over yet, however, with a final 40-minute climb up into camp. The track was dry and weather great as trekkers arrived safely and in good spirits, at 5pm where they were able to enjoy some fresh tropical fruit purchased from the local market before settling in for a well-earned rest.

After another challenging day filled with history, stunning scenery and plenty of hard work, the team is now relaxing and looking forward to what tomorrow's adventure will bring.

🥾🇦🇺🇵🇬 Every step forward brings them closer to Kokoda, and the determination of the group continues to shine through.
