DAY 5 - KAGI VILLAGE TO MENARI

Wednesday 19 August

After a fantastic evening in Kagi Village, the trekkers were treated to a memorable traditional sing-sing performed by the local villagers. The music, singing and dancing provided a wonderful insight into the local culture and was the perfect way to finish another rewarding day on the Kokoda Track before settling in for a well-earned night's rest.

The group was up early once again and began the day with a short 10-minute walk out of Kagi Village, passing the local church and airstrip before reaching one of the most challenging sections of the entire trek. They then tackled the steepest descent on the Kokoda Trackโ€”a demanding 45-minute downhill hike to the creek below. Although tough on the knees and legs, the cool creek provided a welcome opportunity to rest, refill water bottles and prepare for the next climb.

From the creek, it was straight back uphill with another short but steep 10-minute climb before continuing along a 45-minute section of track exposed to the morning sun. It was very hot today however, despite the heat, everyone pushed on strongly until reaching Efogi 2, where a well-deserved break allowed the group to catch their breath, refuel and enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery surrounding them.

After their break, the trekkers descended into Efogi 1, where they visited the local museum to inspect a fascinating collection of wartime artefacts and hear more stories about the Kokoda Campaign and the important role the village played during the conflict. They then walked through Efogi Village, meeting friendly locals along the way, before reaching the creek for another chance to top up their water supplies.

The afternoon's biggest challenge awaited as the group climbed steadily through open country towards Mission Ridge. The relentless ascent certainly tested everyone's determination and resilience, with more than a few trekkers feeling the effects of the climb. After reaching the top, it was only a short hike across to Brigade Hill, where the group stopped to inspect the famous "Bone Man of Kokoda" tree before making the final five-minute climb to the Brigade Hill Memorial.

At the memorial, the trekkers gathered for a moving service to honour the Australian soldiers who fought so courageously in this area during the Kokoda Campaign. They listened to more remarkable stories of the conflict, gaining an even greater appreciation for the bravery, sacrifice and endurance of those who served in such unforgiving terrain. It was another emotional and reflective moment that will remain with the group long after the trek has finished.

Following a well-earned lunch, the trekkers continued on with a long 2.5-hour hike down to the valley floor. The cool creek at the bottom provided the perfect reward after another physically demanding day, with many taking the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim before tackling the final challenge.

The day concluded with a 40-minute climb into camp, arriving at 4:15pm where everyone was delighted to discover a local market selling an amazing selection of fresh tropical fruit, twisties and softdrink. After another outstanding day filled with history, culture and spectacular scenery, the trekkers are now relaxing in camp, enjoying some well-earned rest and reflecting on everything they have experienced so far. Spirits remain high, everyone continues to trek strongly, and the group is excited to see what tomorrow's adventure on the Kokoda Track will bring.
