DAY 1 - KOKODA - DENIKI
Wednesday 21 October
The day had finally arrived. After months of preparation, training and anticipation, the trekkers had at last arrived in Papua New Guinea, ready to begin their Kokoda adventure. On arrival at the airport, they were warmly welcomed by their Aust Kokoda Tours guide, Brad, who coordinated their transfer to the luxurious 5-star Airways Hotel.
Once everyone had checked in and settled into their rooms, a few of the trekkers had a swim while others gathered at the bar. The group then gathered for an important pre-trek briefing. This provided an opportunity to go over the itinerary, discuss what to expect on the track, answer any last-minute questions and ensure everyone was prepared for the days ahead. The briefing was followed by a delicious dinner, giving the trekkers a chance to relax, and enjoy their final evening of comfort before embarking on the challenging journey. With an early start in the morning, it was an early night for everyone.
The Aust Kokoda Tours team were up before sunrise and made their way back to the airport to check in all the trekkers’ bags for the 9:00 am flight to Popondetta, the gateway to Kokoda. This allowed the trekkers to enjoy a much-needed sleep-in before taking advantage of a hot breakfast at the hotel. With plenty of food and coffee on board, the group then headed to the domestic airport, excited and eager to begin the next stage of their journey. On arrival they headed through to the departure lounge where they were then informed the flight would be delayed. After a 90 minute delay they boarded the aircraft and the trekkers settled in for a scenic 30-minute flight. As the plane climbed above the Owen Stanley Ranges, everyone was treated to spectacular views of the rugged mountains and remote landscape that would soon become their home for the next several days. The flight eventually arrived in Popondetta, where the group disembarked and transferred to a troop carrier for the next part of their adventure.
The troop carrier took them into town, where they stopped for a quick snack and a chance to stretch their legs. They then climbed back aboard for the long three-hour journey to Kokoda. The road provided an early glimpse into the terrain and communities of Papua New Guinea, and the excitement continued to build as they travelled closer to the historic starting point of the Kokoda Track.
Upon arriving in Kokoda, the group gathered beneath the famous Kokoda arches for an all-important team photograph. With cameras clicking and spirits high, the trekkers officially began their epic journey across the Kokoda Track. After todays flight delay the group have decided to camp the night in the village of Hoi, taking in the surrounding scenery and enjoying spectacular, sweeping views across the Kokoda Valley.
As they relax this evening, thoughts are already turning to tomorrow where they will tackle the first hill pf the trek and what further challenges—and unforgettable experiences—the Kokoda Track has in store for them.
