DAY 7: MENARI TO NAURO - WEDNESDAY 01 JULY

It was another early start for the trekkers today. While only a half day of trekking was scheduled, it would prove to be just as challenging as many of the full days that have come before it.

The group departed Menari shortly after breakfast, trekking for around 20 minutes before crossing a small bridge and continuing for another 30 minutes to their first rest stop of the morning. From there, they tackled the first major climb of the day up to the Menari Lookout. Reaching the top rewarded the trekkers with spectacular views back across the valley to Menari Village, where they had spent the previous night. Blessed with another beautiful, hot day.

After taking in the scenery, the group descended along the ridge for approximately 45 minutes before stopping to refill water supplies. The track then led them through a notoriously muddy swamp, requiring careful footing as they made their way towards the Brown River. Upon arrival, many took the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing swim and cool off before continuing on.

A short 15-minute trek brought the group to Amaduri Village, where they stopped for morning tea and a well-earned break. Refuelled and refreshed, it was then back into the swamp for another 45 minutes as the humidity steadily increased throughout the morning.

The trekkers eventually arrived at the base of the infamous False Peaks and paused for a final rest before taking on the day's biggest challenge. What followed was a long and relentless climb up the Maguli Range towards New Nauro Village. While the weather remained favourable throughout the day, it was still a little slipper underfoot & this ensured that the ascent was every bit as demanding as expected.

Despite the tough conditions, the group showed great determination and teamwork, steadily making their way to camp. Arriving at New Nauro Village earlier than usual, the trekkers were able to enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

With some time to spare, many took the opportunity to wash clothes, relax around camp and recover from the morning's efforts. As has become something of a tradition on the trek, a few of the men were quick to find a quiet spot for an afternoon nap!

The group continues to do exceptionally well, maintaining high spirits as they draw closer to the end of their Kokoda journey. Tonight, will be another opportunity to rest, recharge and prepare for the adventures that await tomorrow.
