DAY 1 - KOKODA to HOI

Friday 26 June

After plenty of planning and a few nerves, the students and teachers finally landed at Port Moresby International Airport yesterday. They were met by their AKT Guide “Ian” and transported to the five‑star Airways Hotel. A few enjoyed a rest while others had a swim. In the evening, they gathered for a pre‑trek briefing, had dinner, and turned in early.

They were up for breakfast at the hotel and just before heading back to the domestic airport for the 30‑minute flight to Popondetta. The group were notified the flight had been postponed to 1130, putting them 2.5 hours behind schedule. Fortunately they were still at the hotel so they headed back to their rooms to rest. They headed back to the airport at 1030am for the flight and once arriving in Popondetta, it was a short 20‑minute drive into town to pick up supplies and snacks. Then began a long, dusty four‑hour journey from Popondetta to Kokoda by private vehicle, travelling along the Japanese advance route from the coast and passing historic sites such as Wairopi, the Kumusi River, Awala, Oivi, and Gorari.

The road wasn’t in great condition, and after finally arriving in Kokoda they inspected the Kokoda Plateau and museum and discussed more of the campaign’s history. The trekkers gathered under the famous Kokoda arches for a group photo, then headed into the PNG jungle for the next seven days. They trekked for an hour, passing the village of Kovelo, then another 30 minutes to a short break, followed by about 60 minutes of relatively flat trail before arriving at Hoi for another break. They arrived at Hoi on dusk and have decided to stay there the night and then tackle the Deniki Hill tomorrow. All are doing well and looking forward to what tomorrow has instal for them.
