Day Four: From Vasi to Kagi

The trekkers woke to spectacular views over the creek at last night’s campsite, although the constant rush of water kept a few people awake. After an early breakfast of pancakes, they crossed the bridge and walked for around 15 minutes before beginning the first climb towards Mount Bellamy—the highest point on the Kokoda Track at 2,190 metres.

The group paused at the summit for a photograph before crossing the Kokoda Saddle and continuing through a beautiful, moss-covered rainforest. At times, the forest opened onto sweeping panoramic views, adding to the magic of the surroundings.

The trekkers then reached Myola, where they inspected the dry lake beds. During both phases of the Kokoda campaign, Myola served at various times as one of the Australian Army’s major supply depots. After hearing more stories about the site, the group began a 40-minute descent to Bombers Camp. The track was dry and the temperature was perfect.

At Bombers Camp, they inspected the wreckage of the American bomber Happy Legend and stopped for lunch. They then returned to the track for a long, 2½-hour trek to the Kagi–Naduri junction. After a well-earned rest, the trekkers could see tonight’s campsite in the distance.

The final section took them downhill, across a flatter stretch and then up a short climb into Kagi village where they arrived at 4pm to see the home of many Australian Kokoda Tours porters. The group received a traditional welcome from the local villagers and will enjoy a traditional sing-sing performed by the local communities, followed by a well-earned dessert.
