DAY 6 - MENARI TO NEW NAURO

Thursday 18 June

The crew were up early this morning and eager to tackle another day on the Kokoda Track.

Leaving Menari Village, they began with a trek to a bridge crossing before continuing for another 20 minutes to a short rest stop. From there, the group faced a challenging 45-minute climb to the ridge top, testing both legs and determination early in the day.

The climb continued with a gradual but demanding 45-minute trek along the ridge, where the trekkers were rewarded with views of today's destination, New Nauro Village, visible in the distance.

The track then descended steeply for around 60 minutes to the valley below, where the group enjoyed another quick break before continuing on for 45 minutes through the swamp country to Brown River. The refreshing swim here was a welcome reward and provided a chance to cool off before the next section of the journey.

After a short 10-minute walk, the trekkers arrived at Amuduri Village for morning tea and a well-earned rest. Refreshed and recharged, they headed back into the swamp, where muddy conditions made for slow and challenging going over the next 45 minutes as they made their way to the base of the infamous Nine False Peaks.

With a few scheduled breaks along the way, the group tackled seven of the nine false peaks on the climb towards New Nauro. These relentless ridges can be mentally and physically demanding, often appearing to be the final summit only to reveal another climb waiting ahead.

Despite the challenge, the trekkers pushed on with great determination and arrived at New Nauro Village in good time at 1pm. With another tough day completed, they are now resting, recovering and reflecting on the achievements of the day while preparing for the final stages of their Kokoda adventure.
