DAY 8 - UA ULE CREEK VILLAGE - OWERS' CORNER

Saturday 20 June

The final night on the Kokoda Track was spent with mixed emotions. The trekkers were excited to be so close to the finish line, yet many were amazed at how quickly the past eight days had passed and saddened that the journey was coming to an end.

At first light, the group packed up camp and headed straight back into the creek, crossing it several times over the course of an hour as they made their way towards the base of Imita Ridge.

What followed was one final challengeβ€”a one-hour climb up Imita Ridge. More than a few trekkers declared it the toughest climb of the entire trek, a fitting final test before reaching the finish line.

After reaching the top, the group descended Imita Ridge towards the village of Goodwater, where they stopped for a well-earned break. From there, they continued on to Dump 66 before trekking for another hour to Goldie River.

At Goldie River, the trekkers crossed the water and then gathered arm in arm to reflect on the incredible journey they had shared over the previous eight days. Friendships had been forged, personal challenges overcome, and memories created that will last a lifetime.

With the finish line now within reach, the group set off on the final 45-minute hike. The last 15 minutes were out in the open as they climbed towards Owers' Corner. Thankfully, the track was in good condition and the overcast weather made for ideal trekking conditions.

Arriving at Owers' Corner, the emotions were clear for all to see. The trekkers were exhausted, excited, proud and relieved as they celebrated the completion of one of the world's most iconic and challenging treks. Cold beers, soft drinks and a well-earned BBQ were enjoyed as stories from the track were already being shared.

The group then travelled to Bomana War Cemetery to pay their respects to the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kokoda Campaign and other conflicts. It was a fitting and moving conclusion to their Kokoda experience.

Now back at the premier Airways Hotel, the trekkers are enjoying some well-deserved comfort after eight unforgettable days on the track. This evening, they will gather for a celebration dinner with the guides and porters whose dedication, encouragement and support helped make the journey possible.

πŸ₯ΎπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬ Congratulations to every trekker on completing the Kokoda Track. What began as a challenge has become an achievement that few people ever experience. The memories, friendships, history and lessons learned along the way will remain long after the boots have been cleaned and packed away.

Kokoda crossed. Mission accomplished. Lest We Forget. πŸŒΊπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡΅πŸ‡¬
