DAY 7 - NEW NAURO TO UA ULE CREEK

Friday 19 June

Today marked the final big challenge of the trek, and the crew rose to it with determination and great spirits.

The day began with a tough climb straight out of camp, a solid 60-minute ascent that certainly got the lungs working early. Despite the effort required, morale remained high as everyone knew this would be the last truly demanding day on the track.

Reaching the top, the trekkers were rewarded with spectacular views across the Maguli Ranges, where history tells us the Japanese forces reportedly caught sight of the lights of Port Moresby during their advance. It was another powerful reminder of the significance of the ground they have been walking.

From there, the group trekked across the ridges and down through the valleys for around 90 minutes before stopping for a well-earned break. A short descent then brought them to Ofi Creek, where many enjoyed a refreshing swim before making the short climb up to the campsite for morning tea.

After refuelling, the trekkers faced one of the toughest climbs of the entire trek—ascending to Ioribaiwa Ridge. The track was in good condition, although the sun was out and it was hot making the climb a little more challenging.

Ioribaiwa Ridge holds immense historical significance as the furthest point reached by the main Japanese force during the Kokoda Campaign. Upon reaching the ridge, the trekkers dropped their packs and took a short 15-minute side trip to visit a Japanese ammunition dump and several Japanese slit trenches hidden amongst the jungle.

Returning to the main track, they descended into Ioribaiwa Village, where they enjoyed lunch and a well-earned rest before setting off once again.

The group made their way down towards Ua Ule Creek and here, a few changed into their water shoes before beginning one of the most enjoyable sections of the trek. The route followed the creek itself, with the trekkers crossing the water more than a dozen times on their way to tonight's campsite.

Now settled into camp for their final night on the Kokoda Track, the group is enjoying a swim and reflecting on just how far they have come. It's hard to believe that tomorrow is the last day of hiking.

Everyone is travelling well, spirits are high, and excitement is building for the final stage of the journey. Tomorrow they will climb Imita Ridge, take in one last iconic Kokoda view, and then make their way to the finish line at Owers' Corner.

🥾🇦🇺🇵🇬 One more day to go. The finish line is now within reach, and an unforgettable Kokoda achievement awaits.
