DAY 4: VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI - SUNDAY 28 JUNE
The trekkers awoke to spectacular views across the creek from last night’s campsite. While the scenery was unforgettable, the sound of the rushing water made for an interesting night's sleep for some! Before long, the day began with a 5:00am wake-up call and a hearty breakfast of pancakes to fuel another big day on the Kokoda Track.
After breakfast, the group departed camp, crossed the bridge, and began a short warm-up hike before tackling one of the most significant climbs of the trek. The steep ascent led them to the summit of Mount Bellamy, the highest point on the Kokoda Track at 2,190 metres above sea level. Reaching the top was a proud achievement for all involved, and the trekkers gathered for a well-deserved group photograph to mark the occasion.
Following a short rest, the group continued through the rugged mountain terrain before crossing the famous Kokoda Gap (Saddle). Here, the track winds through beautiful moss-covered rainforest, creating one of the most picturesque sections of the entire journey. The cool mountain air and ancient forest provided a welcome contrast to the demanding climbs of the morning.
Several hours later, the trekkers arrived at the historic Myola dry lake beds. During both phases of the Kokoda Campaign, Myola served as one of the Australian Army’s most important supply depots, with aircraft dropping vital supplies to troops fighting along the track. Standing on these expansive grasslands, the group gained a deeper appreciation of the logistical challenges faced by Australian forces during the campaign.
Now settled into camp after arriving in at 4:00 pm, the group are now reflecting on today’s dry trek conditions and are excited for their cultural day tomorrow.
