DAY 5: CULTURAL DAY - MONDAY JUNE 29

Today the students enjoyed a well-earned sleep-in after several challenging days on the Kokoda Track. Despite the later start, many were still up early, taking in the peaceful surroundings of Kagi Village and enjoying some extra time to relax.

Following breakfast, the students divided into groups and spent the morning assisting the local community with a range of projects. One group helped with grass cutting, another collected and chopped firewood, while others worked in community gardens. It was a fantastic opportunity for the students to give back to the village that has welcomed them so warmly and to gain a greater appreciation of daily life in remote Papua New Guinea.

After a productive morning, the group enjoyed lunch before visiting the local school. The visits provided valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by communities living along the Kokoda Track and allowed the students to learn more about the important role these facilities play in village life.

The afternoon was filled with fun and laughter as the students took part in a series of games against the porters. Friendly competition, plenty of smiles and great camaraderie made for a memorable experience that further strengthened the bonds formed throughout the trek. The crew won against the porters in tug of war which they are pretty proud of.

Some students also took the opportunity to wash clothes, while others enjoyed a refreshing swim before returning to camp to relax.

The group has now finished dinner and is settling in for the evening. Everyone continues to do well, with spirits high and plenty of stories being shared around camp. Most are planning an early night as they prepare for tomorrow's adventures and the next stage of their Kokoda journey.
