DAY 4 - VASI CAMPSITE TO KAGI

Monday 29 June

The trekkers enjoyed spectacular views from last night’s campsite above the creek. Despite single digit temperatures, most recorded their best night’s sleep so far and were up at 5:00 a.m. for Day 4. They set off across the bridge, followed by a short 20‑minute walk and then a sustained steep climb to the high point of Mt Bellamy (2,190 m). After a rest, they pushed on for several hours and crested the Kokoda Saddle, where the forest track is draped in moss. The group paused for a photo at the summit before descending to the Myola lakes — dry lake beds that served at times as major Australian supply depots during the Kokoda campaign.

Following an inspection of Myola and more campaign stories, the trekkers dropped 40 minutes to Bomber’s Camp to view the wreckage of the American B‑25 bomber plane the “Happy Legend” and have lunch. The track was dry, as they continued on a long 2½‑hour march to the Kagi–Naduri junction, then down and briefly up into Kagi village — home to many of the Australian Kokoda Tours porters. The track remained mostly dry and boots stayed remarkably mud‑free. Morning sunshine gave way to cloud in the afternoon, and the group arrived into camp in good time at 4:00 pm, where villagers welcomed them warmly.

This evening the trekkers will enjoy a traditional sing‑sing by the local communities and a well‑earned dessert. It was a demanding day for many, but spirits remain high as the group looks forward to their cultural day tomorrow.
