Victory in the Pacific

Victory in the Pacific marked the end of the biggest ever threat to Australian soil.

The War in the Pacific was the first time in Australia's history that people felt directly threatened by an external aggressor.

But on August 14 1945, Japan surrendered, and Australia erupted in celebrations on the streets as news broke that the long-gone troops would return home.

VP day is celebrated on August the 15th and our August trek coincides with this memorable date, providing this trek with a significance that should be experienced.

St Josephs College

St Josephs College Geelong.png

St Josephs College Geelong have trekked Kokoda with Mick O’Malley and Australian Kokoda Tours since 2013 and cannot speak highly enough of the team and the trek. The College offers the Kokoda experience to its year 10-12 students.

Kokoda gives the boys a chance to not only experience the challenge of the track themselves but majority of them will choose to trek with their dads, big brothers, mothers or other significant family members. In June 2019, St Josephs College will trek Kokoda again.

The College regards the eight-day trek as a fantastic experience for all involved, saying Mick and the Australian Kokoda Tours team do a great job detailing the historical significance of Kokoda to a new generation of young Australians. St Josephs College is proud to offer their young men this experience of a lifetime and hope they will spread the message of the courage, mateship, endurance and sacrifice made by the young men who left their homes all those years ago to defend Australia.

Saint Ignatius College

Year 11 students from Saint Ignatius College Drysdale will trek Kokoda for the first time this June with Australian Kokoda Tours, initiated by Deputy Principal of the College, Michael Timms. Michael first witnessed the positive impact that the Kokoda challenge has on students and parents in his previous role at St Josephs College Geelong, and believes this is a fantastic experience for young people.

Saint Ignatius College are looking forward to trekking Kokoda to not only gain a first-hand appreciation and deeper understanding of the shared history between Australia and Papua New Guinea, but also to enhance the students’ relationship with their parents. Taking on the Kokoda track allows parents to watch their children transition from child to young adult. Trekking Kokoda creates the perfect time and place for this transition, during an important time in a young person’s life.

The challenging and testing environment that is Kokoda requires determination and trust from everyone involved, and Saint Ignatius College are looking forward to seeing student bonds grow through the shared challenge.
